SILVER VS TOOTH-COLORED FILLINGS
Learn more about fillings and our superior restorations.
For many years, dentists have used silver fillings to restore decayed teeth. However, over time, the hot and cold liquids we drink cause the silver to expand and contract. As a result, this movement can make teeth crack.
Initially, these fractures are small and difficult for dentists to detect. Over time, the fractures may go deeper, causing patients to experience temperature and pressure sensitivity when biting. In some cases, large portions of the tooth can even break off.
When this happens, dentists often need to perform a root canal procedure to resolve the symptoms. Furthermore, it becomes more difficult and costly for dentists to restore the tooth at this stage.
To prevent these issues, a more proactive approach is recommended. Dentists can replace silver fillings with new composite fillings or porcelain-bonded restorations before any cracking occurs. By doing so, they can usually prevent further deterioration of the tooth.

Dental composites offer several advantages. Not only do they chemically adhere to the tooth and bind it together, but they also restore strength and integrity. In fact, composites are typically as strong as the original tooth. Additionally, dentists can formulate them to match your tooth color, so you’ll be pleased with how natural they feel alongside your original teeth.
